Business

BTEC Business is an optional subject and only available to pupils from Key Stage 4 onwards. This subject creates the opportunity to explore the world of business, looking at different types of ownership, to what makes some businesses saucerful. The subject explores the characteristics of entrepreneurs, the importance of market research and the internal and external factors that impact businesses.

Business allows students to explore their own entrepreneur skills as component 2 creates the opportunity for students to plan and consider how a business of their own may operate. This component allows students the opportunity to apply their knowledge and to consider the viability of their business idea. Through this process students will develop planning and research, presentation, communication and self-reflection skills.

  • Exploring Enterprises- Internally assessed coursework, In this component you will have the opportunity to develop your knowledge and understanding of the different types of enterprise and their ownership, looking at the characteristics of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and entrepreneurs and measuring the success of each
  • Planning for and Running an Enterprise– Internally assessed coursework In this component you will follow a similar path to that of an entrepreneur looking to set up their own business. You will research and plan an initial idea considering a range of aspects from marketing to finance and then pitching the final idea

 

 

  • Promotion and Finance for Enterprise- Externally assessed examination In this component you will explore the different promotional methods used by enterprises and the factors that influence how enterprises identify and target their market. You will also explore financial documents and how to use them to monitor and improve the performance of an enterprise in order to make decisions and recommend strategies for success.
Assessment

Component one and two assessment are internally assessed. The assessments build evidence against the components assessment criteria and this work then builds a portfolio of evidence for each component 1 and 2. The final component is an exam set by the awarding body. All three components then mark up the final overall grade.

Enrichment Offer

*Subject to COVID restrictions, students will be able to meet local entrepreneurs in order to have the opportunity to discuss how they developed their business and to visit significant local businesses to see their different functions in operation. Students will also have the opportunity to engage in a range of enterprise workshops during the year.
